Mental Health and Psychosocial Support
Under this theme, Pro Public in collaboration with Transcultural Psychosocial Organization Nepal (TPO) conducted a 15 days online training on psychosocial support and Non Violence Communication (NVC) for the community caregivers. The training began with two days of orientation on using an online platform and its features to ease the process. Four groups of eight participants each were created for peer learning and support. They agreed to take photos and record sessions for those with internet issues. The training was divided into two parts: one by the facilitators from TPO Nepal, they led a session on psychosocial care and support. Their training covered topics such as psychosocial first aid, mental health issues, stress management, suicide prevention, trauma, and gender-based violence, using methods like group work, role plays, discussions, and presentations. Simultaneously, another session was conducted by Nepalese NVC facilitators. This part focused on emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, empathic listening, and self-care over seven days, it was done through group work, role plays, storytelling, and Q&A sessions.
There were 32 participants (13 men and 19 women) from 13 districts in six provinces of Nepal. The training aimed to improve caregivers’ skills in supporting people with mental health issues, suicide risks, gender violence, abuse, and COVID-19 related challenges. The key content of the trainings were as follows:
- Immediate Help: Caretakers offer quick support to community members.
- Counseling: Trained counselors provide deeper assistance in each municipality.
- Medical Care: Cases needing medication or psychiatric help are referred to specialists.
- Training: Community members receive training on handling stress, recognizing suicide risks, and self-care.
- Self-Care: Encourages understanding and managing personal emotions.
- Nonviolent Communication: Teaches effective and empathetic communication.
- Compassionate Interaction: Focuses on improving connections through empathetic listening and honest dialogue.
- Caregiver Support: Caregivers need their own support systems to stay motivated and connected.
A group of eight participants from the same area was created to build self-connection and empathy. This setup made it easier for them to meet and talk about the importance of mutual care and support. They shared their experiences and examples within the group.
The program offered psychosocial support for issues such as anxiety, stress, and sleep problems. It included services like emotional support, psychoeducation, breathing exercises, and referrals, with 19 individuals receiving medical support and 36 receiving psychiatric care. While the project aimed to cover 13 districts, its services extended to 22 districts.
The training program was followed up by a case study that was conducted to apply the learned concepts in real-life scenarios and assess the practical impact of the training. As well as evaluation of the program by the participants to assess the effectiveness of the training program and identify areas for improvement.
