The writ petition concerns pollution control and removal of encroachment in the holy Bagmati River and its tributaries within Kathmandu Valley. The Supreme Court of Nepal had issued a mandamus order to protect the Bagmati River and its tributaries from pollution and encroachment. It directed the Government to:

·       In areas where boundaries were officially defined maintain adding 20 meters to the existing 20 meters distance on both sides of all rivers/streams and prohibit construction within that area.

·       In areas where boundaries were not officially defined, to declare the 20-meter zone from the riverbank as a no-construction area.

Current Status of the Case (as per Supreme Court Order). The case has now been reopened for review and necessary actions are being taken by relevant government bodies.
