Relating to Right to Food-Decided Case
Writ Number: 0149
Year: 2065
Petitioner and Respondent: Advocate Prakash Mani Sharma and others on behalf of Pro Public v. Government of Nepal and Others
The Court held that without the right to food, the enjoyment of the right to freedom is not possible, and life without adequate food cannot be dignified. Therefore, the right to freedom and the right to food are mutually inclusive rights. A dignified life for a human being means a life based on human values, recognition, and dignity. For citizens to enjoy a dignified life, a state committed to becoming a welfare state must ensure peace and security, protect the lives and property of its people, and create conditions where essential minimum needs—such as food, water, shelter, health, freedom, privacy, education, and clothing are economically accessible and attainable by all. To enjoy the right to live with dignity, every citizen must have access at the very least to basic necessities like the right to food.
