Harmonizing Conservation: Enhancing Freshwater Ecosystem Health through Sustainable Fish Management

Pro Public has been implementing a project Harmonizing Conservation: Enhancing Freshwater Ecosystem Health through Sustainable Fish Management for 5 months, starting from June 1, 2024, with the financial support of USAID Biodiversity (Jal Jangal) Activity. The project aims to enhance the capacity of Chaukune Rural Municipality (RM) to implement the Aquatic Animal and Biodiversity Conservation Act (AABCA). It also aims to support Chaukune RM and Dhakari RM to prepare respectively Environment Protection (EP) Bill, and AABC Bill Pro Public will organize a 2 days training program for 25 elected representatives and duty bearers to enhance their expertise and capacity on AABCA.  The project also includes activating four old Community Aquatic Animal Conservation Groups (CAACGs) established with the support of USAID Paani Program and register forming and registering at least six new inclusive CAACGs, and providing capacity development training for CAACG members. The project also includes mutual knowledge sharing among CAACGs, awareness-raising activities on freshwater biodiversity management, managing erosion sites using bio-embankment techniques, and collaborating with neighboring local governments to establish fish conservation zone. The project expects outcomes such as community based management of river reaches and conservation of freshwater biodiversity, enhanced capacity of CAACGs, increased awareness, preparation of EP Bill and AABC Bill, identification of conservation zone, and mapping otter habitats.
