Coalition for Gender Responsive Electoral Process in Nepal

A coalition entitled “Coalition for Gender Responsive Electoral process in Nepal” of five civil society organizations, Forum for Protection of Public Interest, (Pro Public), Institute for Governance and Development (IGD), Women for Justice (WfJ), Videh Foundation and Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO), led by Pro Public implemented Gender Responsive Electoral process in all the 240 constituencies and 75 districts of Nepal prior to Constituent Assembly (CA) elections of November 2013. The overall objective of the project was to support to make a gender responsive electoral process and increase women’s leadership and participation in the CA election 2013 as ‘gender responsiveness’ at present context has become a critical parameter in every development planning, process and activity. The holistic empowerment of women is one of the key agendas amongst all democratic practices.

.The coalition trained 200 local resource persons, with a significant representation of women, Dalit, indigenous, and Madheshi community members, who conducted orientation programs across 75 districts and 240 constituencies. Despite transportation strikes, these resource persons utilized IEC materials covering topics such as the constitution, voter education, and the rights of marginalized groups. Over 13,000 participants, predominantly women, were directly engaged in these programs, with an indirect reach of approximately 68,000 individuals through educational materials dissemination. The initiative, despite challenges, significantly contributed to generating awareness on gender-responsive electoral processes, enhancing voter education, and promoting the participation of women and marginalized communities in elections and constitution-making processes.
