The Status of Nepalese Women

Pro Public conducted a detailed survey on Political Rights and Discriminatory Legal Provisions against Women in September 1995. The survey identified that the women are in a negligible situation. Various legislations were found to perpetuate discrimination against women on the basis of sex. Due to discriminatory laws and traditional notions of the society women are discouraged to participate in the development activities, therefore there was very nominal participation of women in the election of Parliament and local government held in 1992 and 1993 respectively. The report further found that the attitude of the political party had also neglected the female. Finally, the report recommended that development of the country was almost impossible without the participation of women in the political process; therefore, it is essential to raise the participation of women in the political process.
