Pro Public had implemented the Fostering Civic Awareness among Food Aid Beneficiaries in Nepal Project from March 2008 to September 2009 with the financial assistance of World Food Program (WFP). This project was implemented in 19 districts of central, mid and far-western development regions by mobilizing 20 civil society organizations. The main objective of the project was to provide civic education training to the selected WFP beneficiaries in different districts. National Democratic Institute (NDI) was also one of the key partner organizations of this project who developed training modules, information, education & communication (IEC) materials and organized Training of Trainers (ToTs) for Master Trainers (MTs). Pro Public also provided inputs to the NDI activities. During the period of Pro Public provided training to 120,000 Food Aid Beneficiaries on eight modules 1) constitution assembly (CA) process, 2) democracy and rule of law, 3) civic and political rights, 4) human rights and its protection, 5) social inclusion, 6) gender, women rights and participation, 7) Socio-economic and cultural rights and 8) community participation.
Pro Public trained 300 Dialogue Facilitators 19 project districts country who in turn conducted civic education at VDC levels of the specific districts on different eight modules i.e., constitution assembly (CA) process; democracy and rule of law; civic and political rights, human rights and its protection; social inclusion; gender, women rights and participation; Socio-economic and cultural rights; and, community participation. To achieve the objective of the project, IEC materials (posters, fliers, flip charts) were developed to be used by the Dialogue Facilitators during the civic education and to disseminate to the participants in 19 districts. The content of the IEC materials incorporates modules mentioned above.
The main objective of the training was to train the facilitators on the issues of Constituent Assembly Process (CA), Module - 1 and mobilize them to conduct VDC level Civic Education training program for WFP beneficiaries in selected groups. The Master Trainers (MTs) were mobilized after three days long training (May 23-25) in Godavary organized by National Democratic Institute (NDI).
Altogether 120,000 food beneficiaries got direct opportunity to take part in the two days long civic education in each eight modules i.e., constitution assembly (CA) process; democracy and rule of law; civic and political rights, human rights and its protection; social inclusion; gender, women rights and participation; Socio-economic and cultural rights; and, community participation in 19 districts. Each participant was provided posters, fliers, and s/he was expected to educate the other people in the communities. Thus, in an indirect way, an assumption can be made that a large mass of the people was believed to be informed by them.
