Pro Public's project, "Defining the Public Agenda: Strengthening Constituencies for Peace and Reform in Nepal," implemented from January to December 2006 with support from The Asia Foundation, aimed to foster consensus among stakeholders regarding peace and reform through public dialogue forums. Capacity building activities included Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions for Master Trainers (MTs) and Regional Facilitation Training (RFT) for Grassroots Governance Committees (GGCs) and District Coordination Committees (GGDCCs). Despite challenges like political instability, these sessions were conducted successfully in different regions, with key resource persons facilitating the training. Awareness raising efforts involved printing and distributing leaflets, posters, and guidelines, along with distributing copies of the Good Governance Resource Book. This was complemented by the organization of constituency-level Public Dialogue Forums (PDFs) across 56 districts, ensuring inclusivity in participant selection. Additionally, regional PDFs were held to present draft regional agendas, which were later finalized based on participant input. These efforts culminated in a national-level PDF where the draft national agenda for peace, reform, and sustainability of democracy was disseminated and finalized. The event garnered significant media coverage and participation from various stakeholders, including government officials, civil society representatives, and media personnel.
Proceedings of these forums were documented and distributed to participants and key stakeholders. The national agenda, encompassing political, social, economic, and geographical aspects, was officially unveiled in a national-level public dialogue forum attended by prominent figures, aiming to influence state actions for sustainable peace and reform. The agenda, a culmination of public dialogues at various levels, stands as a testament to the collective aspirations of the participants and their commitment to fostering a more peaceful and reformed Nepal.
